White-Eared Hummingbird (Hylocharis leucotis)…
White-Eared Hummingbirds are small – the mature adults are only 3 inches in length.
Both the adult male and female White-Eared Hummingbirds are colored predominantly green on their upperparts and breast. Their undertail coverts are predominately white, and their tails are darkly colored and straight. Their bills are long, thin, and straight, with red at the base. The most predominant feature is their white eye stripe. It is more boldly colored in the male.
The bill of the adult male White-Eared Hummingbird is a brighter red in coloration with a fairly small black tip. His throat is a metallic torquoise blue. His crown and face is violet.
The adult female White-Eared Hummingbird is quite similarly colored, but duller. She also has a spotted, white throat.
The juvenile White-Eared Hummingbirds are similar to the adult female in coloring and size.
The White-Eared Hummingbird’s breeding habitat is in pine oak forests from northern Mexico through the cordilleran ranges, Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre Oriental, and Cordillera Neovolcanica, also the southern Mexico ranges to southern Nicaragua. They regularly stray to central and southeastern Arizona (the White Mountains, the Mogollon Rim, and the Madrean sky islands), as well as the adjoining regions of western and southwestern New Mexico in the United States. It is also occasionally found eastwards to west Texas.
The female White-Eared Hummingbird builds a small cup-shaped nest. She incubates two small eggs for 14 to 16 days. The fledglings leave the nest 23 to 26 days after hatching. The female White-eared raises two broods each year.
