Lucifer Hummingbird (Calothorax lucifer)…

Lucifer Hummingbirds are small – the mature adults are only 3¼ inches in length, and have long, thin decurved bills, small wings, and green upperparts.

The male Lucifer Hummingbird has an iridescent plumage, forked dark tail, green crown, long magenta gorget (throat), grayish underparts with greenish and rusty sides, and a white spot behind his eye.

The female Lucifer Hummingbird is larger than the male and has duller plumage, a pale throat, buffy breast, pale belly, and a long pale streak behind her eyes. Her outer tail feathers are green with a rusty base, black middle, and a white tip.

The juvenile Lucifer Hummingbirds are similar to the adult female in size and coloring. Young males may also have a few purple throat feathers.

The Lucifer Hummingbird favors deserts and arid areas that have agave plants. Their US habitat is the southwestern United States, from southwest Texas, extreme southwestern New Mexico, to extreme southeastern Arizona.

Their Mexico habitat is in central and north Mexico. It is also found in the Madrean sky islands of the northern end of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico.

The female Lucifer Hummingbird incubates 2 white eggs for 15 to 16 days. The young fledglings are ready to leave the nest 21 to 24 days after hatching.
