Sighting a Magnificent Hummingbird must be a marvelous experience. Unfortunately, these “magnificent” little creatures don’t frequent my neck of the woods (sigh). So, I have to make do with pictures and articles and videos…
Bird of the Week: Magnificent Hummingbird
By Melissa Mayntz, About.com Guide
May 5, 2011We’re kicking off our featured birds of Hummingbird Month with one of the most aptly named hummingbirds to visit North America – the magnificent hummingbird is truly magnificent. Not only is this bird one of the largest hummingbird species, but the males also have stunning plumage that includes an iridescent violet crown and a glittering emerald green or teal gorget. Females are not as brilliantly colored but still have sparkling green upperparts and a regal bearing that befits their name.
Have you seen the magnificent hummingbird or had these birds in your backyard? Share your sightings in the comments!

Humorous perspective of a nesting Magnificent Hummingbird…
The photographer must have had a sense of humor when he captured this “candid camera” shot of an adult female Magnificent Hummingbird!
Nesting Magnificent Hummingbird
Magnificent Hummingbird Eugenes fulgens on her nest.
This nest was located inside an aviary for Hummingbirds at the Sonora Desert Museum. It was just inches away from the foot path through the exhibit, and I did not even have to leave the path to capture this image.

A Magnificent Hummingbird photo that captures his “magnificence”…
Wow, I lost count of all the colors on this fabulous adult male Magnificent Hummingbird! Thanks to the photographer for his patience and skills in capturing this handsome little guy….
Magnificent Hummingbird
I worked this guy for a while trying to get him to flash that brilliant gorget and those head feathers. Almost every image has one or the other, but only this one had both! www.birdsinfocus.com/

Getting close to a nesting Magnificent Hummingbird…
The adult female Magnificent Hummingbird may not be as “magnificent” in coloring as the male, she’s still plenty showy compared to other species. Check out this photographer’s “up close and personal” experience…
Nesting Magnificent Hummingbird
Magnificent Hummingbird Eugenes fulgens on her nest. I’m not bragging, the name of this species is really “Magnificent Hummingbird.” They are somewhat large, and the males are quite showy. This nest was located inside an aviary for Hummingbirds at the Sonora Desert Museum. It was just inches away from the foot path through the exhibit, and I did not even have to leave the path to capture this image.
